RIL takes another step towards tapping Indian financial services sector

June 13, 2011

Mukesh Ambani led Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has bought the entire stakes of Bharti group (74 per cent) in its financial services joint venture with French firm AXA, treading gradually towards establishing its footing in the Indian financial services sector.

Bharti Group, a well known telecom major, had chosen to opt out of financial services sector as it did not fit the company’s long-term growth plans. Moving out of its JV with AXA, Reliance Industries has readily stepped in to partner up with AXA in place of Bharti for two of the key services – Bharti AXA Life Insurance and Bharti AXA General Insurance.

Mukesh Ambani had been eyeing a foray into the Indian financial services sector for some time now and was looking to partner RIL with other major players from the financial services sector in an effort to thrust the venture further. RIL has slowly been making progress towards the same and has entered into significant joint ventures with international hedge fund leader D E Shaw and a likely tie-up with payment gateway leader AmEx to help push the vision to realization. It is now being speculated that this latest buyout is likely to fuel RIL’s plans sooner than anticipated. While the tie-up with D E Shaw will see Reliance venturing into institutional financial services business such as asset management, private equity, mutual funds and banking, the tie up with AXA will propel RIL’s entry into the insurance services sector. For now, Reliance Industries has also proposed an agreement whereby AXA would acquire from RIL and its subsidiary Reliance Industrial Infrastructure (RIIL) up to 24 per cent shareholding in both the insurance companies so that RIL will own 45 per cent and RIIL a 5 per cent holding respectively in the JV while AXA gets the balance 50 per cent in the same. With hopes of tapping into the financial advisory sector of India, RIL has acquired a great advantage following this buyout.

Nita Ambani: First face of modern philanthropy

June 9, 2011

Nita Ambani’s name exudes power and command, especially due to the fact that it comes with the appendage of the title of Ambani. But this first lady of corporate India is more than just the name she carries. Today, in every one of her endeavors she has proven her mettle that she is indeed a modern day woman who can run a business just as well she can run a family. But what is more significant is the fact that Nita Ambani’s contributions to the area of social welfare and philanthropy have been so extensive, that she can indeed be termed as the face of modern day philanthropy.

Philanthropy is defined as the voluntary promotion of human welfare. To give one’s time, efforts and support to a cause with all their heart and soul is the mark of a true philanthropist and needless to say, Nita Ambani has earned the title rightfully. All her life, she has dedicated much of her time to community welfare and social causes. She is a firm believer of the fact that India can only progress if the children and youth today are educated and empowered with right skills. In support of education for all, Nita Ambani has been working rigorously to provide education opportunities to underprivileged children and youth. She is even supported by her cricket team Mumbai Indians and its members who have been motivated by their strong arm leader to pursue such a noble cause. Besides education, she has been spear heading the philanthropic arm of Reliance, the Dhirubhai Ambani Foundation, which looks after social and community welfare programs in areas that Reliance functions in. She is also a part of Reliance Industries and UNAIDS partnership which is aimed at spreading awareness, halting and reversing the HIV epidemic in India. To give vision to the sightless, she has been leading Project Drishti, which is a unique initiative by Reliance and NAB.

Nita Ambani has received many a great honors for her role in developing the community and its people but her work towards the same is a far bigger prize to the community.

Nita Ambani: Manning the cricket world on heels

June 8, 2011

The co-owner of Indian Premier League (IPL)franchise Mumbai Indians, Nita Ambani has most certainly made her presence felt in the world of cricket and how! For one, she is a taking charge in a sport that has for long been a male dominated quarter. But lately, Nita Ambani has entrusted that a woman is just as good at managing a team in a sport like cricket like any other man, or even better.

Her journey with Mumbai Indians has been one of many ebbs and flow. When Mukesh Ambani, her husband and co-owner of Mumbai Indians, first purchased the team, Nita Ambani was unsure as to how to handle a cricket team. But she took to the challenge and decided to make it work. Mumbai Indians was a strong team, with many a mighty players feathering its front. But the first two seasons saw the team lose out in the IPL terribly. So far, Nita Ambani had been administering team from behind, but now she realized she needed to put in more proactive efforts to turn the things around for the team. She took to the field, learnt every little nuance of the sport, right from the actual game to its administrational workings. She supported her team, motivated them and helped unite them as one. By the time third season came along, Mumbai Indians were all geared up to face the field. The team did spectacularly, even though they lost out in the finals. But Nita Ambani was happy with the progress. It only indicated towards better future seasons. With the conclusion of IPL4 last month, Mumbai Indians definitely shone brighter than any other team. They were the most supported team in every online poll and although the team managed to reach only till the semi finals, their form and efforts were impressive. Nita Ambani had put in all her efforts, working day in and out from Wankhade stadium throughout the IPL season, and she was happy that the team did well. Perhaps the taste of the title of IPL winners is awaited, but with Nita Ambani supporting the team, it may not be all that ungetatable.
