Reliance Jio to Test 4G Services with its Employees

Reliance Industries’ telecom arm, Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited is gearing up to roll out its most awaited commercial Fourth Generation (4G) services by December 2015. Two days ago, the Mukesh Ambani-led company announced that it has launched a beta program of 4G services to all the employees of the company. This will enable Reliance Jio to test the network and services and work to improve them. Over 1 lakh employees will enjoy the benefit of Reliance Jio’s 4G services before December.

The company has made an investment of over Rs. 1 lakh crore to set up the framework for 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) services across the country. By September, Reliance Jio is planning to cover 5 million users and give 5 Reliance Jio connections to each employee.

Issues reported by the staff regarding the services will help Reliance Jio to fix them and offer quality and seamless services during the launch. The organization will also ensure that the users get 4G services at the current market price of 2G and 3G services.

Pact signed between Reliance Jio and Reliance Communications

Last week, Reliance Jio had signed a pact with Anil Ambani’s Reliance Communications (RCom) Limited. This will let Reliance Jio to utilize 800 megahertz (MHz) spectrum band of RCom in all the regions. Both companies were in talks after the Union Cabinet approved spectrum sharing, last week. The decision states that two telecom companies having spectrum holdings in the same band are allowed to share their spectrum space.

Reliance Jio has permits of using 2300 MHz in all the 22 circles of India, 1800 MHz in 14 regions and 800 MHz in 10 areas. The company spent Rs. 7,876.42 crore in the spectrum auction of March 2015. Out of the ten circles, the company has continuous 800 MHz airwaves in four. The new pact will let the company gain access to all the areas of 800 MHz band and thus provide smooth and efficient services across the entire country.

Internationally, very few 4G services have been rolled out on 2300 MHz band. Higher frequencies give good data speeds, but its signal strength is low. An analyst informed that the coverage for 2300 MHz band will be restricted to a radius of around 500 meters. Reliance Jio is thus embarking upon lower frequencies like 800 MHz and 1800 MHz bands. This will assist the company to offer seamless service and better coverage all over the country.

At the time of spectrum sale in March, this year, RCom bought the 800 MHz band in 11 regions of the country. It thus established its presence all over the country in the 800 MHz band to provide its 4G LTE services. With the new agreement signed, Reliance Jio too will have access to all the regions in the 800 MHz band for providing its 4G services. It is a win-win situation for all – Reliance Jio, RCom, the government and consumers.

Reliance Jio has launched a beta program to provide 4G services to its employees and test the network and services for efficiency.
