Reliance Jio Aims to Introduce a Range of Digital Services to Indian Households

November 25, 2016

Mukesh Ambani led Reliance Jio’s foray into the telecom market marked a huge transformation in the digital sector in India. Jio has even invested a whopping 20 billion dollars towards its all-IP network infrastructure. Although Jio’s 4G services have amassed widespread popularity for their affordability and efficiency, the brand has more plans for the future. This also means that if the company further develops its futuristic digital offerings, it could be recognized among global telecom leaders like China Mobile, AT &T, and Verizon.

Jio Experience Center

The Jio Experience Center, located in Mumbai offers an insight into what the company has in mind for the future, in terms of digitizing the country. The technologies and facilities displayed at the center are aimed at improving not just the regular data and voice services, but other aspects like automation solutions as well. The center mainly showcases the brand’s end-to-end data and voice solutions designed for customers.

Plans for automating homes

Jio has designed various automation solutions for households, which make it possible for individuals to control functions of various devices, simply through a smart phone. For instance, a regular AC can be made to operate smartly by controlling it from a smart phone connected to a network from anywhere. Other benefits of such an automating system include controlling surveillance cameras and door lock systems to optimize security in homes.

Cash-free transactions

Another trending application offered under the brand’s suite of applications is JioMoney. The e-wallet service makes it possible for users to handle important transactions in a cash-free manner. This includes paying bills, making payments at retail stores, and even setting payment reminders. One of the best features, however, is the ability to travel by metro trains by simply tapping a smart phone having the JioMoney application at the entrance to the Metro.

Other futuristic services

JioTV is another offering by the brand. Features of the app include the 7-day recap option. In addition to this, viewers can enjoy more than 6000 movies, in addition to premium television shows and music videos. Apart from this, Jio Education is another offering designed to facilitate interaction between students and teachers from different locations. It also includes course material on the Cloud that students or teachers could gain access to through a device that is connected to the Internet. This ambitious project is currently operational across 300 schools in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh. Jio is also ready with a project model based on the on board diagnostics (OBD) system of a car. The OBD device by Jio will facilitate functions like driver pattern recognition and enhanced car safety. Additionally, the JioHealthHub application is one of the most useful apps for its ability to help users maintain a check on their health by getting prescription medicines through the app and even viewing health reports like CT scans on their smart phones.

Officials at Reliance Jio stated that the brand is focusing on employing a more comprehensive approach in order to extend its digital services to every home in the country. However, Jio intends to ensure the success of its 4G services before extending its technological offerings across other fields.

Reliance Jio to Introduce a Range of Feature Phones in the Indian Market

November 16, 2016

Reliance Jio  is the newest entrant in the India telecom sector, offering data, premium applications, voice and video calling, and messaging services to millions of individuals across the country.

Jio services are currently offered under the Reliance Jio Welcome Offer. It allows individuals to consume unlimited Jio 4G data, voice and video, and messaging services for free up till the 31st of December, 2016. Owing to the high-speed Internet and the aforementioned welcome offer, the company has been able to amass a wide user base of more than 25 million subscribers. It makes Reliance Jio a pioneer in terms of user base acquisition, since the company garnered millions of customers in the shortest period of time. The long-term goal for the company is to garner 100 million subscribers at the earliest.

VoLTE-compatible devices

Functioning as a comprehensive digital ecosystem, the world’s largest start-up as it is often called plans to introduce a new line of cellular devices, namely VoLTE-compatible feature phones. Simply put, a feature phone is a device that incorporates access to the Web, has inbuilt cameras, and audio and video playback but lacks advanced features which are commonly found in smart phones.

The Indian market

In order to encourage those individuals who only utilize the calling feature of their phones to try out data services, Reliance Jio is creating these affordable handsets, which will also be easier to use. The 2G market in India is a large one, and this move will help the company to tap into the same. In the country, almost 65% of the population uses feature phones. Since entry level smart phones are still priced around Rs. 3,000, the price acts as a barrier for people, which these phones by Jio aim to eliminate.

Reliance Jio feature phones

Jio is currently working on two feature phone models, which are to be priced in the Rs. 1000-1500 bracket. To be launched during the first half of 2017, these phones will help feature phone users to harness the power of data. Providing access to data and calling, these devices will not have a touchscreen. The handsets are slated to be powered by Chinese Chipset Company, Spreadtrum, and Jio plans to collaborate with Mediatek and Qualcomm as well. Navkendar Singh, Senior Research Manager at International Data Corp stated that these phones will lead to competition in the market. He predicts that the target sector’s audience will prefer these handsets since all phone calls would also be free.

Mukesh Ambani led Reliance Jio’s line of 4G and VoLTE-supporting feature phones are aimed at serving the millions of users who can only afford these phones. To be priced as low as Rs. 1,000, these mobile phones will also be offered with the Jio SIM card welcome offer, providing users unlimited voice and video calling, messaging, and digital content. The target audience is mainly focused in the rural sectors as well as Tier-III markets of India.

Reliance Jio will introduce affordable feature phones aimed at first-time data users and the rural markets.

Reliance Jio Attracts Customers by Offering the Home-Delivery Option

November 2, 2016

Reliance Jio, launched commercially in September 2016, has witnessed rapid growth. This digital ecosystem, devised by parent company Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), has amassed a large subscriber base of more than 24 million.

A relatively new entrant to the Indian telecom sphere, Reliance Jio is the fastest national service provider. Within a month of the launch of its services itself, the operator had a user base of 16 million and now in less than three months, it has touched 24 million lives. This rapid growth of RIL’s digital arm can be, to a large extent, attributed to its welcome offer that was launched on 5th September, 2016.

Welcome Offer

Under its welcome offer, Reliance Jio users are granted access to unlimited 4G Internet services, local and national voice calls and video calls, and unlimited SMS facilities for free till the 31st of December, 2016. Additionally, individuals may also enjoy the extensive range of premium Jio applications, which lets them browse and stream television shows, movies, music, etc. for free. As part of the company’s offerings, users are also exempted from paying roaming charges, services exclude blackout days, and incoming calls are free for a lifetime.

Jio 4G SIM cards

Jio 4G SIM cards had been in great demand even before Jio’s commercial launch. Even now, retail outlets across the country continue to witness long queues for acquiring the SIM cards. Additionally, in order to streamline the entire process, the world’s largest start-up installed e-KYC machines at its flagship stores. This enables users to submit their Aadhaar Card numbers and fingerprints in order to confirm their identity. Thus, with the help of the electronic verification of identity, users are able to quickly avail of Reliance Jio SIM cards based on just their Aadhaar Card details.

Furthermore, in a move to ensure its user reach is widened even further, the company is initiating a home delivery service. The first of its kind, this will allow interested individuals to avail of a Jio SIM card from the comfort of their homes. Currently, this delivery service is only available in Indian cities like New Delhi and NCR, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Pune, and Mumbai.

The process

Individuals interested in the delivery service need to follow an easy four-step procedure.

  1. Download the MyJio application on to the smart phone and generate the welcome offer code
  2. Visit the Reliance Jio website wherein personal details have to be submitted
  3. Once the Reliance Jio customer executive visits the user’s residence with an e-KYC device, the Aadhaar Card number needs to be submitted
  4. The user needs to also provide a fingerprint on the e-KYC device’s terminal and the generated welcome offer code

Following the successful completion of all the aforementioned steps, the user’s Jio SIM card will be activated within 15 minutes.

Since numerous reports of call drops and slow Internet services have surfaced owing to the non-cooperation of other telecom operators in India, Jio may extend its welcome offer till March 2017. The company intends to extend it to allow users to enjoy its 4G services for a longer duration.

As part of Jio’s attempt to reach a wider audience, SIM cards are being made available via home delivery in select Indian cities.
